What does the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) do?

I know that the EPA protects the environment, hence environmental protection agency, but I need a little more.

Under the Bush Administration, it does as little as it can. Historically, the EPA is federal agency created in 1970 to permit coordinated and effective governmental action, for protection of the environment by the systematic abatement and control of pollution, through integration of research monitoring, standard setting, and enforcement activities.
