    We want to …
    We want to integrate this with the grid we have now, at first. It’s not just to bring RE in also, but to even out loading in general. Pumped storage is already used, but this battery brings similar capability to areas that don’t have the geography. So, we need to be able to charge/discharge this thing into the existing system. That said, microgrids aren’t a bad idea in some areas, depending on the need. I’m just saying there’s no need to tear everything apart right away.

    To send power over long distances, you need high voltages. The main reason we use AC is because a transformer is an easy and simple way to step the voltage up and back down. In fact, high-voltage DC transmission has advantages over AC, and is used in some cases. Right away, though, we’d have to have an inverter/charger scheme to integrate this battery with the grid, but power electronics makes changing DC voltages easier these days, and DC distribution might be used more in the future.

    Obviously you would have some energy loss – all systems have some loss, but if you’re storing it during peak production for peak consumption it might work out to help maintain base load.

    The only reason you need to convert DC to AC is to transfer energy across large distances. Most household appliances run on DC energy. What if you had local energy generation in the form of a micro-nuclear plant (thorium, for example) or a small solar plant that wired its input directly to such batteries, which you could go fill up like you do gas in your car to run your home’s energy for a week? Stop thinking in the old paradigm.

    We had batteries …
    We had batteries for thousands of years… there’s proof of that, just wanted to point that out, like his ideas, but HOW can we look at things like this when we’ve abandoned an item like Hemp! Hemp, able to be changed into 25,000+ products from lip balm, clothing, compressed into wood, even a fuel source, and most importantly paper… In the US we don’t use this one plant that could drastically change our economy, lifestyle, and resources… And there’s no reason for it!
