Global Warming is Real

Posted by admin on August 20, 2012 in Global Warming with 24 Comments

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), in a speech delivered to the Senate on July 30th, 2012, rebutted what he called “myths” espoused by Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), the ranking Republican on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. “Many who take climate science seriously dismiss Sen. Inhofe. I believe that is a huge mistake,” Sanders said of the Senate panel’s former chairman. “For better or worse, when Sen. Inhofe speaks, the Republican Party follows. And when the Republican Party follows, it is impossible to get real work done in the Congress.”

Papantonio: Who Are The Climate Criminals?

Posted by admin on August 14, 2012 in Global Warming with 14 Comments

You don’t have to be an environmentalist or a scientist to be concerned about what’s happening to our planet when it comes to climate change. The evidence is all around us, and as a whole, we’re doing almost nothing to stop the coming catastrophes. And it’s because of a few wealthy, powerful, corporate elites that the United States has almost completely stalled all action to help combat global climate change, and Mike Papantonio recently spoke with Gaius Publius from America Blog about the corporate CEOs who are helping our planet burn to the ground.

FLASHBACK: Fox’s Bolling On Global Warming: “Do We Even Need Our Air Conditioners Next Year?”

Posted by admin on August 8, 2012 in Global Warming with 25 Comments

Last year on his Fox Business show, Eric Bolling dismissed the threat of Global Warming and asked, “Do we even need our air conditioners next year?” Turns out, we did. This summer the U.S. has experienced record-breaking temperatures that experts say are evidence of climate change.

It’s Here! Our First Book, ‘Global Weirdness’, Watch the Trailer

Posted by admin on July 25, 2012 in Global Warming with 1 Comment

About the Book:

There’s a lot of debate about climate change, but not in the scientific community. People who actually study the climate overwhelmingly agree that greenhouse gases generated by human activity are pushing Earth’s climate into a state the world hasn’t seen for many tens of thousands of years. These experts don’t know to the last detail what will happen, but they’ve learned enough to make them very concerned.

This book is an attempt to explain why — to lay out the current state of knowledge about climate change, including what we know, how we know it, and what’s left to figure out. We’ve done our best to explain the underlying science given in clear and simple language, and without the melodrama that characterizes much of the conversation about climate change — “we’re all doomed,” on the one hand, and “it’s just a hoax” on the other. We aren’t interested in preaching. We believe that the facts, presented in a straightforward way, are convincing enough.

We’ve also taken great care to avoid bias. We acknowledge that some aspects of the problem can’t yet be addressed with certainty. We also make clear what climate scientists are confident about.

To ensure technical accuracy, each chapter has been carefully reviewed by Climate Central scientists. The chapters have then been reviewed again by eminent outside scientists who have particular expertise in the relevant subject areas—and then, if necessary, revised again.

The result, we believe, is an accurate overview of the state of climate science as it exists today.

Renewable Energy in Germany 2012

Posted by admin on July 22, 2012 in Renewable Energy with No Comments

Since the year 2000 Germany has developed from a pro-renewable energy country into a Renewable Energy powerhouse aiming for a complete transformation of its energy system.

In Germany most of the renewable energy capacity is owned by individuals or community power projects. In this grassroots energy revolution millions of households, villages and even entire regions have already declared their partial or total energy independence by becoming independent power producers. This is driven by the concept of energy autonomy, of not being dependent on multinational corporations or energy sources that destroy the world future generations have to life in. It was made possible by policy frameworks that enabled & encouraged people to invest in renewable energy sources and enforced market access by removing obstacles that prevent renewable energy projects around the world to this very day.

During the first half of the year solar power alone has produced more than 4% of the total power demand in Germany. While the share was rather small with about 1% in January it grew to more than 10% in May as the days got longer and warmer. Each kWh from solar power has been produced during peak-load hours, replacing coal, gas or oil-fired power stations.

Between January and June the combined power production of wind & solar energy was 5.5-7.5 TWh which represents 16-19% of the total power production every month. While wind power was the dominant source of variable renewable energy sources during the winter months, solar power took the lead in May & June 2012. Additionally biomass produced approximately 2.8 TWh and hydro power produced approximately 1.7 TWhs every month.

This video tries to show how this bottom up push toward a 100% renewable energy system looks like. Enjoy the video!

Giant 46-Square-Mile Greenland Iceberg Breaks off Petermann Glacier

Global warming skeptics, trust us: The latest science news may be just the tip of the iceberg. A glacier twice the size of Manhattan just broke off the coast of Greenland.

The 46-square-mile piece of the Petermann glacier had been cracking off the arctic nation for several years, and now it’s fully broken off. Researchers believe man-made Global Warming is to blame, though they’ve yet to prove that empirically. The latest incident—combined with record droughts, giant wildfires, and heat waves—may contribute to making scientific evidence moot in the court of public opinion.

Greenland, which is covered four-fifths by glaciers, is warming at unprecedented rate, with its northern region increasing by 4 degrees in the last 30 years. Scientists say if more pieces of Petermann breaks off, sea levels could rise further.

Though the cause of the break is still uncertain, somewhere Al Gore is already saying “I told you so.”
