Landcare in the Philippines – World Agroforestry Centre

Posted by admin on September 2, 2012 in Environment Protection with 3 Comments

Landcare in the Philippines highlights the success of community-based, farmer-led organizations in disseminating conservation farming practices and sustainably managing local natural resources. This Landcare movement began in Claveria, an upland community in Mindanao, and has been spreading in many other communities in the Philippines. The video demonstrates the significant contributions that farmers can make, through their own self-governing organizations, in promoting sustainable agriculture, and in tapping outside sources of information, technical support, and financial resources for their efforts. It emphasizes the mutually beneficial link that has evolved between the Landcare movement and the local government.

Produced By: World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF)*

Financial support from:
Cornell International Institute for Food, Agriculture and Development (CIIFAD)
United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
Agencia Española De Cooperacion Internacional (AECI)

1995

* To more fully reflect our global reach, as well as our more balanced research and development agenda, we adopted a new brand name in 2002 ‘World Agroforestry Centre’. Our legal name — International Centre for Research in Agroforestry — remains unchanged, and so our acronym as a Future Harvest Centre — ICRAF — likewise remains the same.

Papantonio: Who Are The Climate Criminals?

Posted by admin on August 14, 2012 in Global Warming with 14 Comments

You don’t have to be an environmentalist or a scientist to be concerned about what’s happening to our planet when it comes to climate change. The evidence is all around us, and as a whole, we’re doing almost nothing to stop the coming catastrophes. And it’s because of a few wealthy, powerful, corporate elites that the United States has almost completely stalled all action to help combat global climate change, and Mike Papantonio recently spoke with Gaius Publius from America Blog about the corporate CEOs who are helping our planet burn to the ground.

Kuramathi Environment Video

Posted by admin on August 5, 2012 in Environment Protection with 3 Comments

www.kuramathi.com

The plot of this 10 minute video revolves around two characters, a father and his son holidaying on a tropical island. While they are lazing around, the father unknowingly and unintentionally harms the environment in each sequence, to which the modern day, “eco-aware” child halts his action, supported by an eco-brochure and corrects him by fast forwarding to the distant future in a thought bubble. The child succeeds in informing his father the right way to protect and preserve the natural surroundings. A brief synopsis of each setting describes how important it is to respect the environment and how we can go about doing it.

Each sequence gives off a subliminal message to its viewers. Employing proper snorkelling etiquette by observing the fragile coral garden from a safe distance, dispersing rubbish into litter bins, and respecting nature by not touching shells, corals and other animals are key notable messages portrayed in the movie.

This original masterpiece was created by Thomas Krajcovic and Matej Petrek, two Austrian students, who was invited by the Kuramathi team to spend one week on the resort, in order to study the island, and its environment and dynamics, selecting the key messages to embed into the film’s storyboard. Under our senior marine biologists’ guidance, the plot was soon finalized and later taken over by the two students for the production of the film. Due credit is also given to the generous patronage by TUI — world famous European tour operator who supported this initiative by sponsoring the flights for the two students.

Giant 46-Square-Mile Greenland Iceberg Breaks off Petermann Glacier

Global Warming skeptics, trust us: The latest science news may be just the tip of the iceberg. A glacier twice the size of Manhattan just broke off the coast of Greenland.

The 46-square-mile piece of the Petermann glacier had been cracking off the arctic nation for several years, and now it’s fully broken off. Researchers believe man-made global warming is to blame, though they’ve yet to prove that empirically. The latest incident—combined with record droughts, giant wildfires, and heat waves—may contribute to making scientific evidence moot in the court of public opinion.

Greenland, which is covered four-fifths by glaciers, is warming at unprecedented rate, with its northern region increasing by 4 degrees in the last 30 years. Scientists say if more pieces of Petermann breaks off, sea levels could rise further.

Though the cause of the break is still uncertain, somewhere Al Gore is already saying “I told you so.”

George Shultz ‘Walks The Talk’ On Clean Energy

Posted by admin on July 15, 2012 in Clean Energy with 7 Comments

For George Shultz, former U.S. secretary of state, Clean Energy is more than a policy issue. It’s personal. That’s one reason he drives an all-electric Nissan Leaf powered by solar panels on his home rooftop. “You’ve got to walk the talk,” says Shultz, who leads the Shultz-Stephenson Task Force on Energy Policy at Stanford’s Hoover Institution. He is particularly concerned about the impact of Global Warming on the lives of his great-grandchildren. “I’ve got to do what I can to see that they have a decent world,” he says.
