Crude Oil Refinery Operations 1994

Posted by admin on August 14, 2012 in Environment Protection with 17 Comments

The approximately 145 operating petroleum refineries in the United States account for significant releases of pollution into the environment and many threats to worker health and safety. The petroleum industry began with the successful drilling of the first commercial oil well in 1859, and the opening of the first refinery two years later to process the crude into kerosene. The original requirement was to produce kerosene as a cheaper and better source of light than whale oil. The development of the internal combustion engine led to the production of gasoline and diesel fuels. The evolution of the airplane created a need first for high-octane aviation gasoline and then for jet fuel, a sophisticated form of the original product, kerosene. Present-day refineries produce a variety of products including many required as feedstock for the petrochemical industry. The evolution of petroleum refining from simple distillation to today’s sophisticated processes has created a need for health and safety management procedures and safe work practices. To those unfamiliar with the industry, petroleum refineries may appear to be complex and confusing places. Refining is the processing of one complex mixture of hydrocarbons into a number of other complex mixtures of hydrocarbons. The safe and orderly processing of crude oil into flammable gases and liquids at high temperatures and pressures using vessels, equipment, and piping subjected to stress and corrosion requires considerable knowledge, control, and expertise. Old Cairo’s Potters

Posted by admin on July 25, 2012 in Environment Protection with 3 Comments

Makram Ahmed Hussein began working in the pottery craft in Egypt’s Old Cairo district of Fustat at a young age. His family was poor; learning a trade as a child laborer was his only route to help support his family and earn a living. In 2000–2001, the potters’ kilns in Old Cairo were destroyed and the potters pushed out as the area was slated for touristic development. The pretext for the evictions was Egypt’s environmental protection law passed in 1994, which was disastrous to Makram and the potters’ community since the kilns used by potters generated thick black clouds of smoke. Many potters lost their means of livelihood. Now under construction are new potters’ workshops equipped with natural gas-burning ovens—a government-sponsored initiative to revive a traditional craft and make it safe for the environment.

Posted by admin on June 4, 2012 in Environment Protection with No Comments

Clean Water Action’s Cyndi Roper on the Michigan Budget & Environmental Protections. From Walt Sorg’s AM Lansing Radio Show discussing the staggering losses in funding for monitoring and enforcement of important water, air and public health laws.

73% in budget cuts since 2002, with an additional 39% cut this year.

What’s left to protect the health of Michigan residents and ensure safe water & air quality?

Why is Michigan still taking everyone’s trash for 21 cents a ton when other states charge upwards of 7-8 dollars a ton? The Great Lakes State does not benefit from these business practices, this money could be used to fund environmental cleanup, monitoring and enforcement of existing health & safety regulations.

Governments vs. Markets: Julian Morris on Environmental Protection

Posted by admin on May 29, 2012 in Environment Protection with 25 Comments

Which does a better job of protecting the environment: governments or markets?

Reason Foundation’s Vice President of Research Julian Morris spoke at Reason Foundation’s annual Reason Weekend and challenged the idea that regulations and energy subsidies will save us from environmental disasters. In fact, they help cause them.

When people are driven by profits and protected by property rights, Morris argues, environmentally friendly products will develop naturally.

Morris is the author of dozens of scholarly articles on issues ranging from the morality of free trade to the relationship between institutions, economic development and environmental protection.

Approximately 28 minutes.
